Our History

A proud tradition of service and dedication to the community

The Bergenfield Police Department was officially established in 1921, marking the beginning of a proud tradition of service and dedication to the community. In its earliest days, the department was composed of just six officers, each equipped with their own motorcycle to patrol the borough and ensure public safety. These founding officers laid the groundwork for what would become a highly respected law enforcement agency.

As Bergenfield grew, so did its police force. By the 1970s, the department had expanded to 53 officers, reflecting the borough’s increasing population and evolving public safety needs. Over the decades, the department continued to modernize, adapting to new challenges and advancements in law enforcement while remaining committed to its core mission of protecting and serving the community.

Today, the Bergenfield Police Department is a multifaceted agency that includes sworn personnel, auxiliary officers, telecommunicators, and records clerks, all working together to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and public service. The Bergenfield Policemen’s Benevolent Association PBA Local 309 stands proudly alongside these dedicated professionals, advocating for their well-being and strengthening the vital connection between our officers and the community they serve.

From its humble beginnings to the present day, the Bergenfield PBA remains committed to honoring our past while shaping the future of public safety in Bergenfield.
